What Am I Responsible For?

As followers of Christ, we are called to actively live out our faith through three key responsibilities. Philippians 2:12-13 reminds us that while God works in us, we are also responsible for working out our salvation with diligence.

A Christian is Responsible for Learning the Word

God’s Word is the foundation of our faith. When we commit to studying Scripture:

  • Our minds are renewed, aligning our thoughts with God’s truth.

  • Our hearts are instructed, teaching us how to love and obey God.

  • Our paths become clearer, guiding us to live righteously.

A Christian is Responsible for Subduing Their Flesh

Spiritual maturity requires that we deny our sinful nature and follow Christ wholeheartedly:

  • Obedience to God’s Word helps us make choices that honor Him.

  • A growing love for God fuels our desire to reject sin.

  • The Holy Spirit produces visible transformation in our lives.

A Christian is Responsible for Increasingly Looking Like Christ

Our ultimate goal is to reflect Jesus in everything we do. As we learn God’s Word and subdue our flesh, we naturally grow into the image of Christ—living as He lived, loving as He loved, and serving as He served. Christianity is not passive. It’s an active, daily pursuit of knowing God, overcoming sin, and becoming like Jesus. Are you fulfilling your responsibilities?

So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
